BBC launching Doctor Who-themed game to teach coding

The BBC is launching an online Doctor Who-themed video game designed to introduce children to basic computer programming skills

The Doctor and the Dalek is a traditional platformer where you play as a Dalek.

The action starts with the Doctor receiving a distress call from a Dalek who has been captured by Cybermen.

The Doctor rescues this unlikely ally and then takes it on a mission to save the universe.

However, the Dalek starts with only a few basic functions and you need to complete a range of puzzles in order to ‘power up’ or ‘pimp’ your Dalek so that it can progress through the game.

The puzzles are where coding skills are smuggled into the game. They've been designed to specifically link to the new school computing curriculum without feeling like a boring lesson.

“Our main aim was to build a great game that would teach kids basic principles of coding by stealth. We want them to feel entertained rather than taught,” Jo Pearce, creative director of the Doctor Who.

For example, one level asks you to navigate the Dalek through a specific path using a sequence of moves and variables while avoiding the evil Cybermats. You have to plan your route in advance with a series of commands like "move forward 3 steps", "turn right" and "wait 2 seconds".

The reward for getting to the end of the route is a new power: your Dalek can now hover on command.

There are eight of these puzzles, each teaching different aspects of programming.

The game was commissioned by BBC Learning and developed by Somethin’ Else. It's part of the BBC's mission to inspire a younger generation to learn how to code.

It’s voiced by the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, and has been developed closely with the team behind the TV show.

"There’s a massive skill gap with people leaving university. So just like we did with the BBC Micro in the 1980s, we are looking to see how we can inspire children and young adults to be creative with this sort of technology,” said Pearce.

I've played around with the game and it feels like a really lovely way to introduce a child - or adult - to the basic principles of coding.

Latest about Android's new version

Google unveiled the Android L v5.0 OS at the I/O 2014 conference. During the conference, the search giant showcased several new features the next-generation OS version has to offer. In addition, the official name of the OS version dubbed "Android L" was not announced. According to a brand new report, the "L" stands for "Lollipop"; there is also a video preview of Android L tested on Samsung Galaxy S5.

Google has not officially released the latest OS version yet; however, device manufacturers get to test the upcoming software releases earlier than the general public. Apparently, Sam Mobile was able to access Android L with build "LRW58J," pertaining to the Samsung Galaxy S5 with model number SM-G900F. The site points out that its staff wanted to release the firmware to the public. However, the staff did not push through with the plan due to numerous bugs in the build (alpha). They also said that the handset became extremely sluggish with the latest OS version on board.

Here are the standout points of the latest OS version tested on the Galaxy S5:

1. The user interface is fresh and the touchscreen experience has improved tremendously. Samsung has been using the blue theme straight from the Galaxy S2 days. However, the company has redesigned the look with a white theme. The aforementioned site opines that the white theme is very appealing to the sight. However, Sam Mobile says the white theme consumes relatively more power with the superior AMOLED display in tow.
2. Samsung's patented system apps like Dialler, Messages, Clock and Memo, among others, have been redesigned with Google's Material Design guidelines in mind. Also, Android L's brand new lock screen stands out. The lock screen prevalent in current-generation devices only show the date and time. With Android L, the lock screen also shows optional notifications. The flip side of bringing notifications to the fore, however, is widgets cannot be added to the lock screen.
3. There is also a useful "heads-up notification" feature that alerts users of incoming calls, SMS and even low battery notifications without disrupting the ongoing activity. Plus, there is a built-in clipboard tool that stores the record of screenshots and even the copied text.
4. MirrorLink support is also added in the latest OS version. As the name implies, this feature allows users to mirror their handset's screen to their car display.

Microsoft's next release is Windows 10 not 9

At its Windows event in San Francisco today, Microsoft announced the next release of its operating system. Known until now as codename Threshold, the successor to Windows 8 will officially be known as Windows 10.

Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating System, unveiled the name, after saying Windows is used by about 1.5 billion people. “Windows is at a Threshold and now it’s time for a new Windows,” Myerson said at the event. “It wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9.”

Before giving the new name, Myerson trolled everyone by saying it would be called Windows One. Since Windows 1 has already been released though, the company chose to go with Windows 10. He did promise, however, that Windows 10 would work across all types of devices (computers, tablets, phones, and of course the Internet of Things): “One product family. One platform. One store.”

The new operating system will offer a tailored experience for each device, but a single store will offer apps and updates across all devices. Windows 10 “will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time,” Myerson said.

The Start menu not only has live tiles, but you can resize them, which impacts the overall size of the menu itself. You can also search the Web and receive results without opening up a browser.

While showing off the new operating system, Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft, said today that going from Windows 8 to Windows 10 is like going from a Prius to a Tesla. “They don’t have to learn any new way to drive.”

Windows 10 will naturally support universal Windows apps. As has been rumored before, they will be accessible from the desktop in a windowed mode. The Snap View will also work with both classic and universal apps.

Belfiore also demoed new features like Task View (which shows you all the apps that are currently open, even across virtual desktops):
Despite the focus on the mice and keyboard today, Microsoft will keep the touch part of Windows 8 around. The argument here is that touch users have higher satisfaction on Windows 8 devices than on Windows 7 devices. The opposite is true for mouse and keyboard users. As a result, Microsoft wants businesses to think of Windows 10 as a merging of Windows 7 and Windows 8.

This release is also expected to be different in that Microsoft is hoping to gather more feedback than usual. Many of the features and changes aren’t even ready to show off yet, so testers can expect the company will be constantly tweaking its offering over the next months.

It’s important to emphasize that today’s event is the first of many to come. While this one focuses on enterprise and power users, Microsoft will naturally host others, including ones for consumers. In fact, early next year the company will talk “more about the consumer story” and during its Build conference in April 2015, it will “share more about Universal apps.”

While working on a document or other file in almost every program, pressing Ctrl + S saves that file. This shortcut key should be used frequently anytime you're working on anything important.

8.Ctrl + Home or Ctrl + End

Ctrl + Home will move the cursor to the beginning of the document and Ctrl + Endwill move the cursor to the end of a document. These shortcuts work with most documents, as well as web pages.

Open a print preview of the current page or document being viewed. For example, press Ctrl + P now to view a print preview of this page.

10.Page Up, Space bar, and Page Down

Step 1: Open VLC media player and Click On "Media" to Select "Open Network Stream".  CTRL + N is the shortcut to perform this task.

Step 2: Open Youtube and head over to your Favourite Video, Copy the URL of the youtube video which will look like https://www.youtube.com/watch?#######.

Step 3: Once you have copied the URL simply Paste it there where it says Enter the network url and Click Play.

You will see that the Video is Streaming in VLC Smoothly.
